About Nelson Latin Dance Collective
A local Latin dance school and community in Nelson, created through a love of Cuban dance, bachata, connection, rhythm and joy.
Our Story
How it all began
Nelson Latin Dance Collective grew from a simple love of Cuban dance and community. A few years ago, our dance colleague Tania Huddart began organising Cuban dance socials in Nelson. At the time, there was no one regularly teaching Cuban-style dance locally, so Tania created a space where people who loved Cuban dance could come together, practise, socialise and keep learning.
She also invited visiting teachers to Nelson, giving the local dance community opportunities to gain new knowledge, upskill and experience different styles and approaches.
When Tania moved away, her legacy was continued by Jarek, who carried on the socials and began sharing Rueda de Casino and Rueda de Bachata with the Nelson community.
Today, the collective continues in that same spirit — bringing people together through Latin dance, creating opportunities to learn, and keeping the joy, connection and community of Cuban and Latin dance alive in Nelson.
Our Purpose
Our community is a space created by dancers, for dancers, driven by the pure joy and passion for Latin rhythms. We come together to celebrate Latin dance in all its forms, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone is encouraged to express themselves, contribute and belong. We believe that dance is about connection, community, joy and fun — a valuable part of a balanced, fulfilling life.
Our Mission
We create a platform where dancers of all levels can come together to enjoy Latin dance, connect with others, grow and share their skills. By running classes, social dances and trips to festivals, we build a supportive and inclusive community where there is a place for everyone.

About Jarek
Jarek first discovered Rueda in 2009 in Pamplona, Spain, and has been dancing it ever since. He has danced at festivals, classes and socials across Aotearoa, Spain, Singapore, Italy, Poland, Chile, the USA, Hungary, the Philippines, and most recently Cuba, learning from Cuban maestros. His intention is simple: to create more opportunities for people in Nelson to dance Latin together.
Teaching Approach
Our approach is simple: explain clearly, dance often, keep it social, and make room for mistakes — have tons of fun. We believe people learn best when they feel safe and relaxed enough to have a go. The goal is not perfection. The goal is to dance, connect, learn, laugh and enjoy the music together.
